I'm with you on winter - I appreciate and enjoy it more as I've gotten older. But I definitely rate autumn in Perth as a bit of an unsung hero, nice cool nights, sunny days with the odd bit of rain. Feels like everything is calming down and taking a slow deep breath after summer.
PS I have a fascination with art deco architecture as well, can't really explain why, I'm just drawn to it. The Beaufort/Walcott intersection is one of my favourite parts of Perth for architecture
Thanks for sharing this, Brento. Totally agree with you. Autumn is definitely underrated in that way. It has a great mix of weather elements. Especially after those summers. And good call on the Beaufort/Walcott intersection. I’m a fan too - it’s pretty iconic.
You made the right call, Michael! The light is too important to put up with that and I’m not even joking all that much. And at least as nomads, you can go back when it suits you.
Great, we're about to celebrate Independence Day with a pool party this weekend and all I can think about is cozy wintering in Melbourne. 😅
We're winter avoiders, as well. We much prefer Autumn and there's not much that can top Autumn in New England. In a good year, it is stunning. If you ever make it to these shores, don't miss the opportunity to spend the fall on the east coast of the US.
Haha! I’d like to issue a formal apology to you and all the pool party guests 🙃
I would absolutely love to visit New England one day. I don’t know how I know this, but I have heard autumn is incredible there. It’s definitely on the list!
Your writing has a way of inviting me in, carrying with it the genuine hospitality one might experience at their favorite local cafe; remembered fondly and greeted warmly. The cozy table in the corner where my best writing and people watching happens. write and people watch. To rest and to breathe. I sometimes save your posts for the weekend so I can linger as long as I like without feeling rushed. Not quite sure why one would need to be given permission to consume oxygen, but alas, I’ve just experienced the deepest breath of ocean air, and my soul thanks you. Also, how is it possible for your wintering piece to ooze of warmth? brought me to a place of allowing winter to be winter, and summer to be summer.
Oh no, of course! Thank you so much for the thoughtfully written and generous comment, Athena. It's always nice to know that it resonates so I really appreciate it, and thanks for reading. Hopefully I can maintain the cozy cafe vibes despite the odd broken plate or two!
This one struck a chord with me!

Wonderfully descriptive. So pleased you've been able to stretch those legs and eyeballs🤣
Thanks, Joyce! It was a delight to stretch them!
Here in the PNW, we are surrounded by towering trees, which is wonderful -- in summer, when there is plenty of daylight.
In winter, when the sun doesn't come up until after eight and is gone by four? IT SUCKS AND I CANNOT HANDLE IT!!!
Good thing we left, eh?

This is so well written Michael. Great to read and it has the ability to make you feel like you're in Elwood. Fantastic piece.
Thanks very much, Dad. Really appreciate that.
I feel myself transported to Elwood, fantastic piece of writing.
Thanks, Mum. I reckon you'd really like Elwood.
